More detail on these projects is below:

  • AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION PHILIPPINES — Stay Bright Programme

Over 20 million children walk to and from school on the Philippines’ roads with minimal pedestrian infrastructure and compromised visibility. To tackle this issue, the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) has launched the Stay Bright Campaign on the need to see and be seen on the road. Initially funded by the FIA Road Safety Grants Programme, the project is now supported by Fundación MAPFRE, Pilipinas Shell, 3M Philippines and the Philippines Global Road Safety Partnership (PGRSP). As part of the initiative, safety lectures are given to elementary school children, barangay officials and enforcers, informing them about road signs, road markings and road equipment. Personal reflectors, reflectorised vests and tapes are distributed to children and enforcers. Additional collaterals such as module booklets, the Land Transportation Traffic Code, and other relevant material are given out. The project has allowed AAP to access local data from schools and local officials, assess school environments and make recommendations to improve them. So far, the project has been developed in two cities, Lipa City in Batangas Province and Mandaluyong City in Metro Manila. It will be expanded to other cities and potentially other countries in 2023.

  • TURKISH AUTOMOBILE SPORTS FEDERATION — Parents’ Report Card

With this project, the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) aims to raise awareness of road safety among elementary school children aged 7-11 while promoting motor sport disciplines. The project relies on the organisation of conferences in state schools featuring professional racing drivers dressed in racing overalls who explain the safety precautions applied in racing events and provide basic information on road safety. During these events, videos and promotional roll-ups and educational leaflets are used to invite children to obey the road safety rules. A race car is also exhibited in the school to showcase the specific safety equipment of racing cars. At the end of each conference, children are asked to evaluate their parents’ traffic behaviours. The evaluation is shared with the school and the parents to make them become safer drivers. So far, TOSFED has trained more than 15,000 children in over 50 schools, located in more than 20 cities. All of the materials created to support the project have been approved by Turkey’s Ministry of National Education and included in their own traffic safety trainings and booklets for children. From 2023, TOSFED will extend this programme to include middle schools.

  • INTERNATIONAL ROAD ASSESSMENT PROGRAMME (iRAP), AUTOMOBIL CLUB DIN MOLDOVA, AUTOMOBILE AND TOURING CLUB OF NIGERIA, REAL AUTOMÓVIL CLUB DE ESPAÑA, AIP FOUNDATION (Vietnam) — Star Rating and Improving School Journeys with FIA School Assessment Toolkit

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of fatalities among children and teenagers, many of these happen on their way to and from school. The FIA School Assessment Toolkit aims to tackle this issue and presents a clear 10-step approach to undertake school assessments and road improvements using the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) methodology developed by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). SR4S is a systematic, evidence-based, globally standardised approach to measure, monitor, and communicate the risk children are exposed to on journeys to and from school. It has already been used to assess 944 schools in 55 countries, and its experience was applied in the development of the FIA School Assessment Toolkit. Since 2021 and with the support of the FIA Road Safety Grants Programme, road assessments were undertaken notably by FIA Member Clubs the Automobil Club din Moldova (ACM), Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) and AIP Foundation (Vietnam). Following these assessments, the Clubs partnered with road authorities and local partners and implemented life-saving infrastructure, including pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, traffic calming, signs and markings, and safer speed limits to improve children safety around schools. Nearly 200,000 students in these countries are now benefiting from improvements measured by SR4S and will have safer journeys to school. More broadly, this project is triggering the adoption of safer road policies around schools and the engagement of the school community.

  • TOURING Y AUTOMÓVIL CLUB DE COLOMBIA — Raising Awareness Among America's Club Presidents to Create a Genuine and Real Commitment Around Children's Road Safety

On the occasion of the FIA American Congress that took place in August 2022 in Cartagena, the Touring y Automóvil Club de Colombia (ACC) invited FIA Region III and Region IV Club Presidents, FIA representatives, the Director of the Colombian Road Safety Agency, members of the local government of Cartagena, school representatives and the media to a 1,300-student school located in a poor neighbourhood in Cartagena to install the safety elements prescribed by the FIA School Assessment Toolkit and the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) programme: traffic signals and painted signs on the road. The activity, which aimed to leave a legacy to the city after the Congress, had a wide media exposure, which led other schools to ask ACC for help with the installation of safety elements.  ACC’s annual budget for 2023 will include a provision for the continued application of the SR4S methodology. ACC also invited the National Road Safety Agency and some private companies to "sponsor" schools in 2023 to make their surroundings safer for children.

  • AUTOMÓVIL CLUB DEL ECUADOR — Safe Mobility for Children and Young People of the Schools of Ecuador

The Automóvil Club del Ecuador (ANETA) project seeks to build a culture of safe mobility in Ecuador through road safety education targeted at students from the initial to the high school levels. The project is organised around three axes rolled out in selected educational institutions. The first one aims to train basic and high school students aged 6-18 on road safety standards thanks to interventions of the ANETA's Itinerant Road Unit, visits to the Club’s driving schools and videos available on online education platforms. The second axis focuses on instructing teachers in initial education schools (children aged 3-5) about road safety and helping them transmit that knowledge to the kids through online courses and development of road circuit models. The third one is organised around the granting of scholarships for driving courses to third-year high school students designated as Flag Bearers of the public educational institutions, at the national level. During the first year of the project, which is supported by Ecuador’s Ministry of Education, around 50,000 students from 240 schools nationwide have been trained. 800 initial level teachers have received the 12-hour online course and three types of road circuits have been designed for implementation in early education establishments. Finally, 250 scholarships have been awarded to Flag Bearer students from schools in 20 provinces of the country.

  • KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSE TOERISTENBOND (The Netherlands) ANWB Streetwise | De Verkeersgame (The Traffic Game)

With ANWB Streetwise | De verkeersgame (The Traffic Game), ANWB provides parents with an innovative, playful and fun experience with high educational value to help them in delivering road safety and traffic education to their children. The game gathers relevant information, tips and actual traffic missions that parents and kids can take on together to increase engagement. It combines the power of storytelling, appealing characters and game mechanics with the latest up-to-date learning goals in a free app that is both fun and truly educational. The game is a great tool for ANWB to reach its goal to reduce traffic incidents and related victims, as it allows kids to be more aware of the risks and rules on the road while accompanying parents in teaching their children how to get safely from A to B. Supported by an impactful launch and promotion plan, in its first 7 months the app had been downloaded over 56,000 times and reached an app rating of 4+ stars. The app is part of the larger Streetwise Programme. In the upcoming months, new assets will be launched, such as a completely new digital curriculum for all elementary schools throughout the Netherlands and a traffic themed activity week at school. The binding factor in all these assets is the combination of gamification and storytelling with educational content as well as the use of the lively Streetwise world and characters.

  • AUTOMOBILE CLUB ASSOCIATION (France) — Website mobisenior.fr

mobisenior.fr is a website dedicated to the mobility of seniors that offers real support to enable them to maintain their mobility for as long as possible, in complete safety. It provides a lot of practical information, but also questionnaires for visitors to assess their knowledge of the highway code, as well as tests to check their vision, hearing and cognitive abilities, all of these anonymously, free of charge, and directly from home. When users are unable to drive, the website informs them about alternatives to the car that can help them preserve their mobility. If senior users wish to learn more, they can also register for mobility workshops through the website and attend face-to-face or video group training sessions. With more than one person in five in France aged 65 or over, and this number being expected to increase in the coming years, the Automobile Club Association (ACA) is addressing a key societal challenge: ensuring mobility is accessible and adapted to elderly people. The latter has been a topic of concern for the FIA community over the past years, and the Self-Assessment Tool for Elderly Drivers developed by the Reial Automòbil Club de Catalunya (RACC) has been a starting point for the development of the mobisenior website. Since its launch, the website has been supported by France’s Road Safety Delegation (part of the Ministry of Interior) and by major partners such as the Crédit Mutuel, Essilor France and Mobilité Mutuelle.

  • KOSOVA TOURING ASSISTANCE — First Aid on Road

To improve knowledge about basic first aid steps and actions to be taken in case of an emergency on the road, and before the arrival of an ambulance, the Kosova Touring Assistance (KTA) added a First Aid section to the existing KTA app. To populate this new section with clear and easy-to-understand content, the KTA produced a series of nine animated videos on first aid. Describing the first aid steps to be taken while waiting for emergency services to arrive, these videos enable app users to train themselves — as first aid basic knowledge can effectively save lives — or to be guided when faced with an emergency situation. To promote the new feature of its app and encourage more people to use it, KTA launched an online awareness campaign on first aid including giveaways with First Aid Package for those who downloaded the app and watched and rated the videos.
