In a continuing global expansion, the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission (WIMC) will be supporting 24-year-old BMW of North America Scholarship Driver, Ashley Freiberg, who competed in the No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 for Turner Motorsport at the 54th Rolex Daytona 24 hour race

Ashley is the first female driver from the United States of America to be supported by the Commission and will also race this season for the Starworks Motorsports in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship Prototype Challenge category.

As the Commission expands to the USA, Freiberg joins supported drivers competing in a number of different disciplines across Europe.

Freiberg noted: “I am so incredibly excited and honoured to represent the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission. I have always pushed through my own brand to encourage people to follow their passion and to get involved in whatever they dream of. Women have proven, in all forms of motorsport, that they can do their job as well as anyone, and after all the car doesn’t know what gender I am. It is fantastic for me to spread that message with an organisation of this caliber alongside some of my own heroes like Michèle Mouton. I look forward to helping more women get involved in motorsport, whether it be driving, engineering, or as a mechanic. If I can help to change the mindset that women can be successful in motor sports, then I will have achieved something worthwhile.”

The WIMC is now in its seventh year and consists of 32 members representing 23 countries. WIMC President, Michèle Mouton said: “We are very happy to be supporting Ashley and hopefully raising awareness of women in our sport in the United States. It is so important we spread our messages worldwide and demonstrate that anyone can participate in our sport; it is a question of knowing this is possible, having motivation and a desire to succeed.”

Ashley Freiberg is supported by her sponsor IHG Rewards Club, the world’s largest hotel loyalty programme, in her career ambition to gain recognition at the highest level of global motor sports.

The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission aims to put in place strategies and policies that will promote education and training, and put into practice actions and events that will strengthen the participation of women in all areas of motor sport. The Commission works with the FIA’s sporting and non-sporting commissions, ASNs and other key international federations on joint sporting projects. The WIMC also takes an active role in international forums and conferences devoted to the place of women in sport, and the advances that can be made.
