1.35 million people die and 50 million are seriously injured on the world’s roads every year. Despite the growing efforts to improve road safety, the results are disappointing and there is a need for an urgent change. The joint Global Road Safety Initiative of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) seeks to address this global challenge, with particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries.

Jean Todt, President of the FIA and Jean-Charles Decaux, Chairman of the Executive Board and Co-CEO of JCDecaux, have renewed their road safety partnership – #3500LIVES – for the third year running. This global campaign was launched in 2017 to reduce road crashes, which cause 3,500 deaths every day around the world.

For World Sight Day (WSD) 2017, the FIA welcomed Michael Fassbender as its new #3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign Ambassador. Advocating for improved vision, Fassbender represents the “Check your Vision” Golden Rule for Road Safety. This year, the Federation renews its support for this international day of awareness — held annually on the second Thursday of October — to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and vision impairment.
