Race: Alonso wins tactical battle in China

The third grand prix of 2013 saw the third winner mount the top step as Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso mastered a tactical battle in Shanghai.

Alonso’s winning margin at the chequered flag was ten seconds over the Lotus of Kimi Räikkönen, who with the top three from qualifying neatly reversed, was narrowly ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. He in turn was just 0.2s ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Malaysia winner Sebastian Vettel, and to make it five world champions in a row, Jenson Button finished fifth for McLaren.

Qualifying: Hamilton claims first pole with Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton said he was ecstatic with his first pole position for new team Mercedes after a qualifying session that saw Mark Webber demoted to the back of the grid after a fuel problem left his RB8 without the amount needed for an adequate sample to be taken.

FP3: Alonso sets the FP3 pace in China

Fernando Alonso staked his claim to a shot at pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix with a lap six tenths of a second clear of the field in the final practice session in Shanghai.

Alonso had spent the early part of the session in the garage as his mechanics made their preparations to his car and he didn’t emerge for his first run on the medium tyre until 25 minutes into the one-hour session.
