A new Driver Training Certification Programme has been officially launched by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) with the goal of establishing a recognised international standard for the training of drivers.

The programme will allow both regular and professional drivers at all levels to benefit from the highest standards of training working in close cooperation with the FIA’s worldwide network of 236 Automobile Clubs in 141 countries, many of which already have great experience in this field.

FIA President Jean Todt said “I am delighted to welcome this new programme for both learner and experienced drivers. We know that improving and maintaining driving skills is one of the most important ways to reduce accidents on the road. The new FIA Driver Training Certification Programme will build on the activities already carried out by FIA clubs worldwide, and we hope it will be recognized as the number one international standard for driver training in the years to come.”

The first stage of the programme is to be rolled out in Latin America later this year with the support of the FIA’s Region IV representation and in partnership with the Centre for Accident Prevention Solutions (CEPA), an organisation which is dedicated towards the design of driving training solutions, in particular for fleets.

Jorge Tomasi, President of FIA Region IV, said “Road safety is a huge concern in our part of the world, and working with FIA clubs across the region, we think this new programme and international standard can have a real impact on the prevention of road accidents in Latin America, whether for young drivers or for professional drivers.”

Fernando Cammarota, CEO of CEPA, emphasized: “It is an honour to have been selected by the FIA as training and certification process provider. We will be pleased to start in Latin America, and in this initial phase we will also include a couple of pilots in the Asean Region.”
