Thierry Willemarck has been elected the new FIA Region I President today (15 May 2013). Mr Willemarck is a Belgian national who is also CEO of Touring Club Belgium (TCB). He replaces the out-going President Werner Kraus after serving 8 years in the role.

FIA Region I represents 108 Touring and Motoring Clubs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa from its Brussels office, which total more than 38 million members. The election took place at the Plenary Assembly of the FIA Region I Spring Meeting which is being held in Vienna this week.

They might be fierce rivals on track but Formula One’s stars today came together as one with the FIA to support United Nations’ Global Road Safety Week, which this week drew attention to the need to protect pedestrians the world over. 

According to the World Health Organisation more than 5,000 pedestrians are killed on the world’s roads every week and these fatalities make up a large percentage of the 1.3 million killed on the roads every year. 

Jean Todt, the President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, this month focused his attention on road safety in Africa, one of the continents most affected by unsafe roads.

Efforts need to be scaled-up if the world leaders still aspire towards reaching the objectives they have set themselves in March 2010 through declaring the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. This is one of the conclusions that the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) draws from the trend-setting Global Status Report on Road Safety released today by the United Nations World Health Organization in Geneva.

The FIA General Assembly, held in Istanbul, Turkey, today, marked the end of the annual meeting week attended by sport and mobility FIA Member Clubs from around the world and which culminates with the FIA Prize Giving Gala this evening.
