Closed road commission

30.09.13

A new commission, focusing on the safety of competition routes, has been created within the FIA, following approval by the members of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC). The Closed Road Commission will be responsible for examining safety measures on roads used for rallies, cross country rallies, hill climbs, acceleration events and any other speed competitions.

The Commission will be charged with gathering data and making recommendations pertaining to the safety of a course, the measures in place to protect drivers, officials and spectators, as well as the procedures regarding organisation and supervision of these events.

While ASNs will continue to be responsible for monitoring the application of safety requirements and recommendations established by the FIA, the Closed Road Commission may submit to the WMSC in coordination with the Safety Commission general or specific measures to further improve safety.

The Closed Road Commission will liaise with all event stakeholders and, through a membership comprising the Presidents of the circuit, rally, hill climb, historic, cross country and medical commissions, as well as the FIA World Rally Championship safety delegate and a drivers’ representative, will provide a vital role in the safety of these road events. The President of the Closed Road Commission will also become a member by right of the Safety Commission.
