The FIA is pleased to announce that it has become Carbon Neutral and certified ISO 14001:2015, in accordance with its commitment to manage and reduce the environmental impact of its activities.

In order to comply with the Paris Agreement, the FIA put in place a carbon reduction plan aiming at reducing emission of its own operation by 20% in 2025 and 50% in 2030. At the same time, the carbon footprint of 2020 was fully compensated by investing in offsetting projects allowing the organisation to become carbon neutral this year. The projects are spread around 3 continents (South America, Africa and Asia) and meet the most stringent international standards. The investment involves forest conservation and restoration as well as avoidance projects that allow renewable energy generation, benefitting biodiversity, local communities and having positive economic impact in developing countries.

ISO 14001:2015 sets standards for an effective environmental management, it helps organizations identify, manage, monitor and control their environmental performance. It is based on 3 pillars:

  • Minimisation of harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities
  • Conformity with applicable regulatory requirements
  • Continual improvement of its environmental performance

These achievements, following a demanding process, were objectives at the core of the FIA’s environmental strategy for 2020-2030 adopted in December 2020, aiming to becoming carbon neutral from 2021 and net zero by 2030.

The Federation set up a dedicated Environment and Sustainability Commission in 2017 chaired by former President of Mexico Felipe Calderón, and joined the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework (UNFCC) in 2019.

Environment is one of the four topics of the Purpose Driven initiative focused on the societal contribution of both our Sport and Mobility pillars.

Jean Todt, FIA President said: “With ambitious targets, the FIA has been determined to tackle the climate change challenge and accelerate the transition towards a sustainable future for all. Reaching Carbon Neutrality and obtaining ISO 14001 certification demonstrate that we are on time, on the right track. In reducing the environmental impacts of its activities and continuing to lead sustainable innovation, FIA takes its responsibility in taking motor sport and mobility into a low carbon future.”

Felipe Calderón, President of the FIA Environment & Sustainability Commission, said: “Measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions is a great achievement for the FIA that demonstrates its commitment to the environment. More than an end, this is a beginning in our journey to join the efforts of all others to tackle climate change and get a better planet.”
