WEC - Harry Tincknell: "The new Ford GT is really very nice to drive"

14.04.16
Britain’s Harry Tincknell will have a busy weekend at Silverstone as the 24 year old from Exeter will be part of Ford’s debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship, joining fellow Brits Andy Priaulx and Marino Franchitti in the no67 Ford GT, and also taking part in the European Le Mans Series race on Saturday, racing the G-Drive Racing Oreca in the LMP2 class.

How is the testing with the new Ford GT going?

“The Prologue was only our second test of the year and we are learning a lot as a team.  Everyone’s working together well and the more laps we can do the better we go.  I’m enjoying working with Andy (Priaulx) and Marino (Franchitti) in the no67 car and we’re quietly confident going into the first race at home at Silverstone.”

So what is the Ford like to drive compared to your LMP2 car?

“The new Ford GT is really very nice to drive.  I don’t have too many references for a GT car but it certainly feels very nice.  Obviously it’s a lot heavier than the cars that I am used to, and there is not so much downforce, but it is still a fantastic car to drive.  It gives you a lot of feedback, which as a driver it’s great because it means you can push the limits without it doing something too nasty. It’s all positive.”

Ford is celebrating 50 years since the 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans in 1966.  Does this add any more pressure and workload?

“2016 is a special year for Ford at Le Mans but we’ve got two races before then, so I am not thinking too much about Le Mans yet.  We just want to get to Silverstone in the best shape possible and show what we can do.  Of course there is a lot of history behind the Ford GT car and it will be really great if we can emulate some of the past glory but we know it is a very, very competitive class and we’re still learning all the time.  I’m sure we will go to Le Mans in great shape.  It’s great for me personally to be involved with such a massive manufacturer with so much racing history so if we have any extra PR stuff to do at Le Mans, that is fine by me.”

So at Silverstone will you have to put LMP2 and GTE stickers on the steering wheel to remind you which car you are racing?

“Silverstone is going to be a challenge jumping between the GTE car in WEC and LMP2 in ELMS, but like I said earlier the Ford gives you a lot of feel and I know the P2 very well, so I don’t anticipate any problems. I am just looking forward to racing at home in two big races.”
