At the recent Mexican Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel made comments over team radio using repeated foul language directed at both the FIA Formula 1 Race Director Charlie Whiting and a fellow competitor which were retransmitted during the live broadcast of the event.

Immediately following this incident, Sebastian Vettel spontaneously sought out Charlie Whiting to express his regrets for his behaviour in person.  He then, again on his own initiative, sent letters to each of the FIA President Jean Todt and Charlie Whiting, in which he apologised profusely for his actions.  He also indicated that he would likewise be contacting  Max Verstappen and vowed that such an incident would never occur again.

In the light of this sincere apology and strong commitment, the FIA President has decided, on an exceptional basis, not to take disciplinary action against Mr Vettel by bringing this matter before the FIA International Tribunal.

The FIA will always condemn the use of offensive language in motor sport – especially when directed at officials and/or fellow participants – and expects all participants in its Championships to be respectful and mindful of the example they set for the public and the younger generation in particular. 

The FIA takes this opportunity to advise that, in the event of any future incident similar to the one that occurred in Mexico, disciplinary action will be taken by bringing such incident before the FIA International Tribunal to be judged.

DECLARATION DE LA FIA CONCERNANT LES AGISSEMENTS DE SEBASTIAN VETTEL LORS DU GRAND PRIX DU MEXIQUE DE F1

Lors du récent Grand Prix du Mexique, le pilote de Ferrari Sebastian Vettel a proféré des injures à plusieurs reprises via la radio de l’équipe à l’encontre du Directeur d’Epreuve de la Formule Un de la FIA Charlie Whiting et d’un autre concurrent, propos retransmis lors de la diffusion en direct de l’épreuve.

Immédiatement après cet incident, Sebastian Vettel a spontanément cherché à joindre Charlie Whiting afin de lui exprimer en personne ses regrets pour son comportement. Il a ensuite, à nouveau de sa propre initiative, adressé des lettres au Président de la FIA Jean Todt ainsi qu’à Charlie Whiting, dans lesquelles il présentait ses excuses. Il a également indiqué qu’il contacterait Max Verstappen et promis qu’un tel incident ne se reproduirait jamais plus.

Compte tenu des regrets sincères exprimés par M. Vettel et des engagements qu’il a pris pour l’avenir, le Président de la FIA a décidé, à titre exceptionnel, de ne pas donner de suite disciplinaire à cette affaire et de ne pas la porter devant le Tribunal International de la FIA.

La FIA condamnera toujours l’utilisation d’un langage offensant dans le sport automobile - notamment envers des officiels et/ou d’autres intervenants - et attend de tous les participants à ses Championnats qu’ils aient un comportement respectueux et soient conscients de l’exemple qu’ils donnent au public et aux jeunes en particulier.  

La FIA profite de cette occasion pour indiquer qu’à l’avenir, en cas d’incident semblable à celui qui s’est produit au Mexique, des mesures disciplinaires seront prises et qu’elle saisira le Tribunal International de la FIA.
