INTERESTING FACTS

The Nürburgring is considered one of the world’s most legendary race tracks. Opened in June 1925 the original track was 28.3 kilometres long and could be used in different variations. But even in those less safety-conscious times, it was soon considered too dangerous and by the late 1930s only the circuit’s north loop (Nordschleife) was used for race meetings.

Jackie Stewart described the demanding circuit as “Green Hell” and it was widely considered as extremely dangerous. Various accidents like Nikki Lauda’s horrific crash 40 years ago, added to the growing concerns over safety and led to the departure of the Nordschleife from the F1 calendar.

At the beginning of the 1980s a new, modern GP track was build and opened in 1984. After a modification in 2001/2002 the layout now features a 5.148 kilometres long circuit, of which FIA Formula 3 European Championship uses a shorter version (the sprint circuit).

The track’s location in the Eifel region can mean very unpredictable weather with the possibility of rain showers, fog and low temperatures, which adds to the challenges of the venue.
