Italy will host the 13th round of the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship with the teams making the trip across the Alps to the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Coming only a few days after an incident-packed Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, the season moves directly to another classic track for the final European race of the year.

Button wins as Grosjean banned

McLaren’s Jenson Button wins at Spa as Romain Grosjean receives a one-race ban and a €50,000 fine for causing a multi-car pile-up.
Jenson Button cruised to an imperious Belgian Grand Prix win after he escaped a first-corner multi-car accident triggered by Romain Grosjean that later result in the Lotus driver receiving a one-race ban and a €50,000 fine.

Button on pole, Maldonado penalty

Jenson Button dominated the final two segments of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix to claim his first pole position since the Monaco GP of 2009.
Kamui Kobayashi took a surprise second place, ahead of Williams’ Pastor Maldonado, though the Venezuelan’s pleasure at being third fastest on the day was later tempered by a three-place grid penalty, imposed for blocking Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Alonso shines under Belgian sun

Fernando Alonso topped the timesheet in the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix as the rain finally abated at Spa-Francorchamps.
Having been hampered by wet sessions yesterday, a dry track and sunny conditions were always going to make for a busy session this morning and so it proved as the team’s attempted to compress a day’s lost work into a single one-hour session.

Washout in FP2

Torrential rain limited Spa running to reconnaissance laps.

Kobayashi fastest in FP1

A wet track limited running at Spa but Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi pressed on regardless and was rewarded by finishing the session on top.

Race Preview

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps will host the 12th round of the 2012 Formula One World Championship as the Grand Prix of Belgium signals a return to racing following the series’ summer break. The track, which winds up and down through the Ardennes, has its reputation built on speed. At around 20 seconds, the section from La Source to Les Combes is the longest duration an F1 car will spend on full-throttle in 2012 – should the driver take the Eau Rouge/Raidillon combination flat-out.
