WTCR - 2020 Race of Aragon - Race 2 Quotes

Quotes from the top 3 finishers in Race 2 at WTCR Race of Aragón, Yvan Muller, Jean-Karl Vernay and Mikel Azcona appear below.

WTCR Race of Aragón, MotorLand Aragón, November 13-15
WTCR − FIA World Touring Car Cup, rounds 14, 15 and 16 of 16

Yvan Muller, Cyan Racing Lynk & Co, first position
“Winning was not my priority, I could have won one at Budapest, but I gave that to Yann. My target was to help make Yann the world champion and he is now. I made a good start, then I pushed hard for five laps, then I said OK, keep cool a bit. Then there was the safety car so I lost everything. But I had some tyre left so it was OK. When I came to see François Ribeiro [WTCR promoter] when Yann was 17 years old I said you should put some money on him because he will be world champion, and now he is.”

Jean-Karl Vernay, Team Mulsanne, second position
“We are a private team, so we are also fighting for the WTCR Trophy and we can be proud to have won it. It was the first target for the team and we reached it. It wasn’t easy, the Audi guys were quite strong competitors. The first target is now done and we can focus on the overall podium. It is not going to be easy, I have all the Lynk & Co guys in front and I’m quite sure they also want Yvan on the podium. I’ll go all in, I don’t care. I was upset about the race this morning, obviously, we lost a lot of points, but it is what it is and it’s a decision we made. We all make mistakes, but I think we showed a great mentality and we never give up, as we showed in Race 2. I’m super-happy for the team.”

Mikel Azcona, Zengő Motorsport, third position
“I started from P5. In the beginning on the first lap I was following Jean-Karl Vernay. I could overtake Norbert Michelisz in a very hard battle, after that I tried to push to catch Gilles [Magnus]. I was faster than him but he responded and he made a small gap between him and me. I thought, OK, the race is over but in the last lap I pushed to the maximum. I caught him and was very close to his rear bumper and I tried the overtake on the last chicane, a very clean move without any contact. I’m very happy to take third position again in Spain.”
