FDM launches EV charging network on the island of Bornholm

For the next seven years, the Federation of Danish Motorists (FDM) will run an EV Charging network on the island of Bornholm, based in the westernmost parts of the Baltic Sea.

The network consists of 11 chargers, two of which are DC fast-chargers. This more than doubles the number of charging stations available for the residents of Bornholm and the large number of tourists from Sweden, Germany and Poland that visit the island.

A special type of Public-Private Partnership underpins the project. One party (in this case, the local government) finance the often prohibitively expensive underground electrical work. The other part (in this case, FDM) supplies, runs and maintains the actual charging endpoints.

FDM hopes “The Bornholm Model” will gain traction around the country, as it can significantly aid the rollout of charging infrastructure.

FDM made sure access to the network was easy and equal. The charging stations require no memberships or subscriptions – any car, and any driver, can use an app to pay for charging via a credit or debit card. Because the costly underground work has been funded by the local government, the price for charging on FDMs network is approximately half of the Pay-As-You-Go prices on other comparable, privately owned charging facilities.
