The winners of the FIA 2017 Historic Championships were honoured in Paris, during an evening which looked back at the memories of 2017, as well as forward to the projects for the upcoming 2018 season.

Traditions are a part of historic motor sport. One that has existed for many years is the honouring of the FIA Champions in February during a ceremony which is entirely dedicated to them. The winners of the 2017 season were therefore invited to the prize-giving for the six FIA Historic Championships on 2 February at the Pavillon Vendôme in Paris, right next to Place Vendôme, which is also not far from the FIA headquarters. The trophies were handed out to the different winners by the President and the Vice-President of the FIA Historic Motor Sport Commission, Paolo Cantarella and His Royal Highness Prince Joachim of Denmark, in the presence of 170 guests.

The ceremony obviously honoured men and women, drivers and co-drivers, but historic motor sport is as much, if not more, about the celebration of the cars of yesteryear. In an era in which modern racing cars sometimes seem to be cast out of the same mould, historic competitions feature a huge range of noble cars with very different origins and concepts. 2017 featured such diverse models as the ultralight Bergspyder Steyer Puch 650cc, driven by the Austrian Harald Moessler (winner of the FIA Historic Hill Climb Championship in Category 1) and the Cooper Monaco driven by the British team of Keith Ahlers and James Billy Bellinger (Champions of the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship for the second consecutive year). It also included the Formula One Fittipaldi F5A-Cosworth driven by Max Smith Hilliard, winner of the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship in the Stewart-Fittipaldi Category, and the Formula Junior Lotus 20 driven by Swiss Bruno Weibel, winner of the FIA Lurani Trophy.

In addition to this prize-giving, several meetings of the Circuit and Rally Historic Sub-Commissions took place at the FIA headquarters, as well as a meeting between the organisers of the FIA European Historic Sporting Rally Championship, to prepare the 2018 season. The Historic Motor Sport Commission also convened for the first time this year, in order to draft various proposals that will be submitted for approval to the World Motor Sport Council next March. Still chaired by Paolo Cantarella, the Historic Motor Sport Commission has several new members this year, including Chip Connor II (HKG), Mark Raffauf (USA), Manfredo Rossi di Montelera (ITA), Adam Berryman (AUS), Claude Demole (CHE), Géry Mestre (MCO) and Raffi Khederlarian (LBN).
