28.04.19

Néstor Girolami, Gabriele Tarquini, Norbert Michelisz, Yann Ehrlacher, Daniel Haglöf and Attila Tassi attended the Race 3 press conference at WTCR Race of Hungary

Q:
Gabriele, just like last year you won Race 3 here at the Hungaroring. Just explain your feelings right now.

GT:
It was a fantastic race. Unfortunately for Norbi, I made two very good starts, last year and this year. This year it was very good. Norbi tried to put pressure on me, because he was very fast, but my car was the best of the season. I chose a different set-up and it was working very well. I’m happy because I need these points for the rest of the season. You never know whether you’ll need them in the end. It’s a long way to go, but I’m very pleased to win in Marrakech and also in Hungary.

Q:
Gabriele, you are a fighter and a racer, but any sympathy for Norbi in front of his home fans?

GT:
Yes, unfortunately for Norbi I made a very good race twice. Last year we were one-two and again this year. I know that Norbi hates me! He wanted to kill me on the podium, but it’s normal, in front of his crowd he wanted to win very much and he made a very good qualifying this morning. He deserved to be in front, but unfortunately for him probably the start cost him the position a little bit, the fighting in the first corner and after he went out of the first corner quite slow, so I took the opportunity to overtake him. After what happened to Esteban I don’t know. He just switched off the engine in one corner. I was very surprised because I was very close to him. Fortunately, I had the time to react and to avoid him.

Q:
Also, a massive transformation for you in performance from Marrakech, where you struggled, to here where it has been a different story.

GT:
Watching from yesterday, no. Yesterday was more or less the same situation as Marrakech. We need to change our approach to qualifying because the pace of yesterday was not enough to fight for the podium. We took some risks because we used a set-up we’d never tried before, also this winter, and fortunately it was the right way.

Q:
Nestor, the other winner today and winning yesterday too. How satisfied are you with that performance?

NG:
First of all, congratulations Gabriele for the victory and the other drivers for the podium. For us it was a fantastic weekend, couldn’t be better. The second race I started P6 and I didn’t imagine to be P1 on the first lap. It was pretty much a crazy first lap for everybody, but I got lucky. I was in the correct moment in the right place. I am sorry for Esteban because he deserved to finish and maybe to win the last race. He had the pace and a good start, but in motorsport sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you are not. But I want to congratulate my team, who did a fantastic job all weekend and also Honda Racing for his amazing car. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.

Q:
Just a quick reminder of Race 3 for you, what happened, Néstor?

NG:
Again, I made a really good start but unfortunately after the first corner I didn’t get good traction and somebody on the inside hit me a little bit, I lose power and I think Azcona and Thed Björk overtook me in the second corner. Then I decided to keep this position because after two wins you cannot take a risk.

Q:
Norbi, you were second again today. Just talk us through the race and perhaps why it wasn’t the victory from the DHL Pole Position you were hoping for.

NM:
To be honest, my start was OK. Esteban did a really good one. He had the inside line and then exiting the second corner I had a small bog down and I think I was too close to him. This cost me a bit of momentum. I was squeezed braking for Turn 2 with Esteban and Gabriele on the outside. I knew it was going to be very tough to stay in front of Gabriele. And then the race was quote straightforward, as Gabby said. My car was really good. I was very happy with the balance. To be honest, as a driver you cannot hope for more, but I’m still a little bit disappointed. Being on pole, OK, an unexpected one, I really wanted to win this race, but I guess you can have worse than finishing second on the podium at the Hungaroring, especially considering Marrakech and also Saturday for us.

Q:
When the safety car came out did that give you any hope you could take the victory?

NM:
Not really, to be honest, because Gabby was really fast. I had a small margin, but he had the same. When you are running one and two you have targets for yourself but the priority is always to bring the result home. I wanted to stay close in case he made a small mistake, which would allow me to go up the inside. But you know him as well as I do. He doesn’t do a lot of mistakes. But I just wanted to stay close in case something happened to take advantage. Thanks to the team, thanks to the crowd for this amazing experience again and I really hope to come back even stronger and win a race finally.

Q:
Yann, you were a winner here last year and are on the podium this year after a very tough Race 2. Please explain the damage to your car when you came back in to the pits.

YE:
Yeah, we had a really difficult Race 2. We got pushed out with two wheels on right side, so I managed to bring the car back to the pits to give the mechanics a chance to repair it for Race 3 as we were starting in a good position. They did a really good job to put my car on the grid for Race 3 and I’m really thankful for that because I wouldn’t be on the podium without them.

Q:
The podium is a great result for you and the Cyan Racing/Lynk & Co partnership so early in your first year.

YE:
Yeah, sure, it’s our second podium together this year and I was really pleased about this – it’s a kind of redemption after the last three races we had. It was quite a good race, a good start as well, I managed to get side by side with Norbi and Esteban. Since the beginning of this weekend I was hit enough in T1, enough drivers smash into me in T1, so I was more careful and I lost the place and was down to P4. I’m sorry for what happened to Esteban but sometimes in racing you are unlucky. So really please for the race result and I’m really thankful to Cyan Racing and Lynk & Co.

Q:
Daniel, your first podium in the WTCR and your first time at the Hungaroring, so quite an achievement. How pleased are you with that?

DH:
Yeah, it’s quite amazing. Two months ago we didn’t know we were going to be a part of the grid, to be here with a team that only started six years ago, so to be on the podium on the world stage is unbelievable. I’m extremely happy and proud of the job of the team.

Q:
And can you explain Race 3?

DH:
In Race 3 I was fighting in P8 or P9 and I got a slow puncture, so we had to pit and change the tyre.

Q:
Attila, a teenage driver, just 19 years old and you score points again here this weekend. Just talk us though today please.

AT:
Obviously for me Race 2 was the best part of the weekend. Qualifying was not as bad as yesterday’s, still I could improve in some corners, but we checked the data and maybe we could have got into Q2 which is very frustrating because the other [Honda] team is doing half a second faster lap times. We don’t understand why for now, so we will investigate this after the race weekend. In Race 2 it was half wet, half dry, so the perfect conditions for me at my home track. From last year I had a really good qualifying in the wet so I know the lines, and had some really good overtaking. Still at the end there was in my opinion not sporty what Huff did with me in T4. I was on the outside we both left the track and he just wanted me to brake on the kerb and the grass, so I don’t think this is how we should do it. But this is racing, the officials find it as a race accident, so I have no doubt about that. Race 3, it was again dry and still I could score points in all three races which is a really good point of the weekend and I’m really looking forward to improve the car and also myself.

Q:
You also got to show the Hungarian football team manager, Marco Rossi, your car. What was it like to meet him?

AT:
Yes, I showed him around the garage and with Norby we also met him in the VIP club. He’s a really good guy and he wished me good luck for the races and obviously we also wished him good luck for his team.

Q:
We’ve been joined by representatives of the FIA’s Girls on Track scheme at the Hungaroring this weekend, and Daniel, they had the opportunity to meet your team. Just explain what advice you gave them and also the efforts of those six girls who are trying to break into motorsport.

DH:
Yeah, it was a really good experience. We showed them a lot of things inside the team, how we worked. From my side I explained how I manage the weekend and what I prioritise. For PWR it comes quite natural for us. We always try to push women into motorsport, we have Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky, the first female victor in TCR so it was natural for us, and I invited her [Milja Kukkonen] to look at the races. Motorsport is fantastic in that way, where men and women can compete under the same conditions, so it is quite unique, so we try to push Mikaela, so hopefully we’ll see her on the WTCR grid in the future.

Q Aleksandar Babic, Serbiaring (Serbia):
Gabriele, you mentioned this is completely changed set-up and you found some solutions you hadn’t tried before. Did you find something to counter the balance of performance, which was favourable for you, or something completely different.

GT:
It’s just a set-up change, also from yesterday it’s a direction we never went before. It’s something to discover. We never tested on this track, in the winter, other teams came here, so probably yesterday we pay a little bit on the set-up and the knowledge of the track because here we have different tyres from last year, so we can’t use the same set-up because the tyres are completely different.

Q Peter Vamosi, Racingline.hu (Hungary):
Electric racing is the future, but only Cupra has a car ready for TCR. Hyundai is working on a car. What about Lynk & Co and Honda. Can you tell us some secrets about your companies and electric racing?

NG:
To be honest, I don’t know what is going on for next season. I’ve heard some comment that a lot of factories are planning on going to the new ETCR, so hopefully Honda as well. I hope so, but I don’t know.

YE:
Of course, you are right. All the factories are interested in electric races because that is the future, whether we like it or not. It is always good to prove that electric cars can go quick on a race track and fight each other, so I’m pretty sure all the brands from this championship will go to electric. I can’t tell you more info about Lynk & Co, but it’s the idea for everybody so I see no reason why we won’t be there somehow.
