The Steering Group for the newly created FIA Innovation Fund met for the first time on 18 May at the FIA Headquarters in Geneva, and selected the first three projects to benefit from the Fund

The Steering Group for the newly created FIA Innovation Fund met for the first time on 18 May at the FIA Headquarters in Geneva, and selected the first three projects to benefit from the Fund:

  • The FIA European Young Women Programme aims to increase the participation of young women in motor sport, reaching a new audience of more than 3000 non-licensed 13-18 year olds and identifying talented young drivers. The project has already secured co-funding from the European Commission.
  • The FIA Youth Olympic Games Project seeks to capitalise on the FIA’s recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), notably through the promotion of electric karting as an emerging discipline. Additionally, it is envisaged that the project provides an opportunity to reinforce the FIA’s advocacy for road safety with a new platform for the #3500LIVES campaign.
  • Track to Road - FIA Expertise Development into Helmets (approved in principle pending further information and modifications) aims to transfer motor sport safety knowledge to the benefit of road users, initially through the domestic motorcycle helmet industry, and subsequently to other non-motor sport helmet applications, such as for bicycles.

The creation of the FIA Innovation Fund was approved by the 2017 FIA Annual General Assembly, the supreme decision-making body of the FIA, that plans the future course of the Federation.

The aim of the Fund is to allocate the proceeds from the sale of the FIA’s 1 per cent share in Formula 1's Commercial Rights Holder to Liberty Media, to support new and worthwhile ideas that will generate lasting benefit for the FIA community.

The Fund will finance projects that meet the following criteria:

  • Innovative
  • High impact
  • Tangible output
  • Strategically aligned with the FIA’s future direction
  • Not currently funded
  • Create a true and enduring legacy for the global FIA Community

One third of the Fund will be distributed to selected Mobility projects, with two-thirds allocated to Sport ventures. A Steering Committee has been appointed to manage the Fund. It is comprised of the two FIA Deputy Presidents, the seven FIA Vice-Presidents for Sport, the six FIA Vice-Presidents for Automobile Mobility and Tourism and four permanent guests (with no voting power), the FIA General Secretaries for Sport and Mobility, the Chief Administrative Officer of the FIA and the Compliance Officer of the FIA.

The FIA has issued a ‘Call for Proposals’ to the Presidents of its 246 members  (motoring and motor sport clubs) to receive propositions for initiatives that meet the Fund’s criteria. The FIA Senate will ratify all selected projects.
