Environmental Vehicle Performance

The FIA is taking a leading role in monitoring regulatory developments relating to the standards of vehicle environmental performance, particularly emissions and fuel consumption. By conducting independent consumer testing programs, the FIA aims to better inform consumers about conformity standards with existing regulations.

    VW Consumer Testing Project

This independent consumer testing was undertaken by a consortium of three FIA Clubs in response to the “defeat device” scandal involving diesel vehicles manufactured by VW.

In September 2015 it was revealed that Volkswagen installed sophisticated software, known as "defeat devices", in diesel vehicles produced between 2008 and 2015. This software was designed to alter the cars’ performance during laboratory emissions testing, making them seem far cleaner and safer for the environment than they actually were.

Volkswagen announced plans to refit up to 11 million vehicles affected by the emissions violation scandal. The recall program aims to bring affected vehicles back to conformity with legislation.

To ensure the recall program has no adverse effects on the engine output, fuel consumption and performance of the retrofitted vehicles, the FIA supported an independent assessment programme conducted under the technical leadership of FIA Member Clubs: ADAC (Germany), OEAMTC (Austria), and TCS (Switzerland).

The results of the test convey an encouraging message to the consumer, supporting the need to refit affected VW vehicles as the test reveals no significant differences in NOX and CO2 emissions, and consumption level when measured under the current test cycles required by the New European Driving Cycle (NECD).

Global reduction in CO2 emissions from cars

Major cities around the world have undertaken ambitious plans to reduce their carbon footprints and strengthen their positions in climate negotiations. With carbon emissions from global surface passenger transport set to grow in the next thirty years, FIA Clubs are undertaking a proactive position in addressing this global environmental issue. The brochure on this topic outlines recommendations for adopting consistent approaches to CO2 abatement.
