During his speech, Mr. Todt highlighted the critical role played by the development of the safe system approach to dramatically improve road safety levels, as well as the work left to be accomplished. He said: “I believe that the Safe System approach continues to offer the best framework available for guiding our actions, starting with the fundamental principle that no human being should be killed or seriously injured as the result of a road crash.”

He mentioned the first UN Habitat meeting on sustainable urban development that will take place in Ecuador in October as an important opportunity to encourage cities to adopt the ‘Vision Zero’ strategy and Safe System approach.
