Wales Rally GB Day Two

SEASON 2012

Wales Rally GB Day Two

FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP
WALES RALLY GB
(13 – 16 SEPTEMBER 2012)

15.09.2012

Jari-Matti Latvala continues to head the leaderboard of Wales Rally GB, the Finn extending his advantage over Ford team-mate Petter Solberg. Third position is held by Sébastien Loeb, the Frenchman again seemingly unable to match the leading pace in the slippery conditions.

Today’s second day of competition near the Brecon Beacons took in another two identical loops of three stages before heading to the all-new super special stage at Celtic Manor. Here, crews powered around the asphalt lanes surrounding the luxurious leisure resort, host to golf’s Ryder Cup in 2010. In total, the route took in 95.36 competitive kilometres.

Crews were greeted by fog early this morning and while Latvala only lost four-tenths of a second to stage winner Mads Østberg, the Finn was lucky to escape a couple of high speed moments during the 19.50 kilometre stage. He is nevertheless totally on form in Wales and went on to win two of the day’s forestry stages, and the super special, to overnight 24.5 seconds ahead. Team-mate Solberg slid off the road in the first stage but has otherwise had a trouble-free day, setting two fastest times in the Fiesta RS WRC. Loeb won the second stage (SS8) but despite the drying conditions was unable to close the gap. He is now 30.9 seconds adrift of the lead but only 6.4 seconds behind Solberg with six stages and 83.10 competitive kilometres to run on Sunday.

After winning the opening stage, Østberg has maintained good pace but has been unable to make any inroads on the multiple World Champion ahead. He maintains fourth with a comfortable advantage over Mikko Hirvonen who continues to struggle for grip. Ott Tanak rounds off the top six.
