"Member clubs have a national role; the FIA co-ordinates their action and activities internationally."

Car safety, environmental regulations and mobility are increasingly negotiated internationally within organisations such as the United Nations or the European Union. At this level, the FIA has a vital role to play. While the FIA's member organisations have close links with national governments, the FIA works on an international basis, actively campaigning for the world-wide development and harmonisation of high standards of car safety, environmental protection and economy.

The FIA also has consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe and enjoys strong working relationships with such diverse bodies as the World Health Organisation, the OECD, the World Tourism Organisation and the United Nations Environment Programme.
