Rally de Portugal (18-21 May) marks the sixth round of the FIA World Rally Championship and the start of a string of European events. Based out of Matosinhos, near Porto, it is one of the founding events in the series; dating back to 1967 the rally celebrates its Portugal 50^th anniversary this year and was included in the inaugural 1973 Championship.

It is the first traditional gravel round of the season and now, back in the north of the country since 2015, has one of the sport’s biggest fan bases. This hugely popular event delivers legendary stages and spectacular action over technical and tricky roads that vary in character with the passage of cars. For the first time this season, Citroën, Hyundai, M-Sport and Toyota will all field three-car teams, Toyota adding a third Yaris WRC for Finland’s Esapekka Lappi. Rally de Portugal is also one of the mandatory events in the FIA WRC 2 Championship and an impressively strong field will take the start in Guimarães on Thursday evening. With additional drivers registered in the FIA WRC 3 Championship category and WRC Trophy for pre-2017 generation World Rally Cars, the 2017 Rally de Portugal looks set to be another fiercely contested event on the 13-round calendar. 

Five stages will be broadcast live; the opening super special stage, the two Braga Street stages on Friday, SS13 (Vierra Do Minho) and the closing Power Stage on Sunday.

THE 2017 ROUTE

There are some changes to the 2017 route but much of the itinerary will be largely familiar. The event kicks off on Thursday in the historic World Heritage town of Guimarães and then takes in a super special stage at the Lousada rallycross circuit. Friday heads north towards the Spanish border for familiar stages, albeit run in different configurations this year. The day is then rounded off with the all-new 1.9 kilometre Braga street stage, which will be run twice. Saturday takes in one new stage - Cabeceiras de Basto - and includes the longest test of the event, the 37.55 kilometre Amarante stage. Fafe remains the centre of attention on Sunday, this legendary stage always drawing crowds in their thousands.

RALLYE DU PORTUGAL 2017

Le Rallye du Portugal (18-21 mai), sixième manche du Championnat du Monde des Rallyes de la FIA, marque le début d’une série d’épreuves européennes. Basé à Matosinhos, près de Porto, il compte parmi les épreuves fondatrices de la série. Créé en 1967, le rallye célèbre cette année son 50^ème anniversaire et a fait partie du Championnat du Monde inaugural en 1973. 

Il s’agit de la première manche traditionnelle courue sur terre de la saison et, de retour dans le nord du pays depuis 2015, de l’une des plus suivies par les fans. Cette épreuve extrêmement populaire comprend des spéciales légendaires et offre une action spectaculaire sur des routes techniques et difficiles qui varient avec le passage des voitures. Pour la première fois cette année, Citroën, Hyundai, M-Sport et Toyota aligneront trois véhicules, Toyota ajoutant une troisième WRC Yaris pour le Finlandais Esapekka Lappi. Le Rallye du Portugal est également l’une des épreuves obligatoires du Championnat WRC 2 de la FIA et un plateau impressionnant prendra le départ à Guimarães le jeudi soir. Avec de nouveaux pilotes inscrits au Championnat WRC 3 de la FIA et au Trophée WRC pour les World Rally Cars de génération pré-2017, le Rallye du Portugal 2017 s’annonce comme une autre épreuve âprement disputée de ce calendrier à 13 manches.

Cinq spéciales seront diffusées en direct à la télévision : la super spéciale d’ouverture, les deux spéciales en ville de Braga le vendredi, l’ES 13 (Vieira do Minho) et la Power Stage de clôture le dimanche.

ITINERAIRE

LE PARCOURS 2017

Quelques changements ont été apportés à l’itinéraire de 2017 mais il demeure en grande partie familier. L’épreuve débutera le jeudi dans la ville historique de Guimarães inscrite au Patrimoine mondial. Une super spéciale sera par la suite disputée sur le circuit de rallycross de Lousada. Vendredi, les équipages mettront le cap vers le nord tout près de la frontière espagnole pour des spéciales bien connues, même si courues dans différentes configurations cette année. La journée se terminera par la toute nouvelle spéciale urbaine de 1,90 km, tracée dans le centre de Braga et parcourue deux fois. Samedi voit une spéciale inédite - Cabeceiras de Basto - et comprend la plus longue spéciale de l’épreuve - Amarante - avec 37,55 km. Dimanche, la légendaire spéciale de Fafe, avec sa déferlante de public, sera au centre de l’attention.
