WEC - Porsche Tops Free Practice 1 in Germany

The two LMP1 Porsche 919 hybrids topped the time sheets at the end of the first 90-minute tracks session at the 6 Hours of Nurburgring. The championship leading no2 919 led the way with Marc Lieb setting a 1:41.703 lap.  The 2015 lap record was set by Lieb’s teammate Neel Jani in the Porsche with a 1m37.955 but this was set on the quicker track section at the final chicane. With the slower part of the chicane being used in 2016 a new lap record will be set this weekend.

Lieb’s time was just 0.047s faster than his teammate Brendon Hartley in the no1 Porsche and two tenths ahead of the first of the two Audi R18s, the no7 car of Andre Lotterer who set a 1m41.903 lap.

The two Toyotas were close to the leading quartet, with the no5 TS050 of Sebastien Buemi setting a 1m42.593, just 0.890 slower than the leading Porsche.

The two Rebellion R-Ones were quickest of the LMP1 Privateer class cars, with Domini Kraihamer in the no13 finishing the session on a 1m48.360, just 0.004s quicker than his teammate Mathias Beche in the no12 car.

The no26 G-Drive Racing Oreca-Nissan of Alex Brundle set the quickest LMP2 lap time with a 1m50.748, 0.688s quicker than the no44 Manor Oreca of Matt Howson and another 0.033 to the no42 Strakka Racing Gibson of Johnny Kane

In LMGTE Pro it was Ferrari from Aston Martin with the no51 AF Corse 488 of James Calado taking the top spot with a 1m58.402 lap, 0.199 ahead of the no97 Aston Martin Racing Vantage of Darren Turner, with the no95 Vantage of Nicki Thiim 0.381s further back.

In LMGTE AM it was the no98 Aston Martin Racing Vantage of Pedro Lamy who was the fastest in class with a lap of 1m59.949, 0.806s ahead of the no50 Larbre Competition Chevrolet Corvette of Paolo Ruberti and 0.941s ahead of the no83 AF Corse Ferrari 458 of Emmanuel Collard in third.

The second 90-minute Free Practice session will start later today at 16h30.
