HOW IS MY DRIVING? FIA Action for Road Safety partner Iveco launches a driver safety project with TNT

22.06.15
Last week, FIA Action for Road Safety partner Iveco presented its new “How Is My Driving?” initiative at the Milan Expo, aimed at discouraging unsafe driving practices by TNT delivery drivers as the next step in Iveco’s road safety strategy

The project will be using a process of monitoring and reporting truck drivers of medium and large vehicles by other road users who notice dangerousbehaviour or who want to complement positive driver behaviour.

This transparent model of shared social responsibility is already applied successfully in other European countries, where it has produced tangible results and created a virtuous circle by stimulating the drivers’ sense of responsibility.

Participants to the press conference of the project launch included Iveco's Business Director Italy & Mediterranean Area, M. L. Daderlat, TNT Italy Operations Director, S. Pezzetti, the General Secretary of the Italian Transport Federation, E. Solaro, the Commandant of Milan Police Department,  Tullio Mastrangelo, the Mobility Manager of Milan City Department, Pierfrancesco Maran, as well as a representative of the FIA, the Global Public Policy Manager, Luca Pascotto.

TNT and Iveco chose Milan as the first city to benefit from  the campaign. A sticker will be attached to the TNT fleet vehicles in use across Milan and each sticker provides a toll-free number – 00800 5656 7878 – other road users can call when they notice unsafe or positive driver behaviour. The Iveco Customer Service centre, which operates 24 hours a day, will collect the data and the results will be monitored and communicated in real time to TNT supervisors.

How well does it work?

Some studies (Fireman’s Fund Insurance) indicate that this kind of monitoring programme can reduce the risk of accidents by as much as 22%, as it creates a clear and monitored deterrent to aggressive and dangerous behaviour – driving styles which also generate greater costs in terms of fuel consumption, insurance claims, vehicle wear and fines for traffic infractions.

Of the 20% of drivers reported, 50% of the calls were to praise positive behaviour, and 50% concerned inappropriate conduct. Other case studies also show that the mere application of the “How is my driving?” stickers can leads to a reduction in accident.

The fleet of vans that TNT Italy uses for the so-called “last-mile” delivery is a first and important test of the concept, involving approximately 100 TNT vehicles in Milan. After evaluating the results, Iveco has plans to extend the programme to other Italian cities and to new partners running professional transport fleets.
