In Mexico, road crashes are the number one killer of children from 5 to 9 years old.  Child Restraint systems are one of the most effective measures to prevent serious injuries to, and even the death of, the child passenger.

To raise visibility on this issue and to contribute to assist FIA Member Clubs in implementing specific campaigns in their respective countries, the FIA, through the FIA Road Safety Grant Programme, has developed a global programme for Child Safety in Cars, which was featured at its stand at the Mexico ePrix.

Being a father himself, Nick Heidfeld testimonied on how he always make his child uses the most appropriate child seat and gave some tips on how to correctly transport children in the vehicle. « Go online if you need to buy a new seat. Check out the tests to see which seat is the safest. », he said.

Esteban Gutierrez, who had participated in the opening session of the FIA Smart Cities Forum in the morning, draw attention to the fact that child safety is a key component of safe and sustainable cities.
Talking about raising awareness on the danger of the lack of use of child safety seats in Mexico, he said « It is important to be sure that everybody has the knowledge of this situation so that we can all be committed to try to make it better and to look at the tools we have to improve safety and to reduce fatalities ».

Lucas di Grassi reminded the importance to generate a cultural change in which adults take the responsibility of encouraging preventive and safer behaviours on the road. He stated, « You have to inform people to make them understand on a large scale why this is important and how it can literally change the situation even in a minor car crash ».

At the end of their visit, the FIA Formula E drivers supported the petition launched by OMDAI, ANA the Mexican Red Cross, as well as SEMOVI, the Mobility Agency in Mexico City, calling for more robust legislation on child restraint systems in Mexico: the campaign #YoCuidoAMisHijos is part of the FIA Global Programme for Child Safety in Cars.
