At the 6th December PPMC (Paris Process on Mobility and Climate) Transport Day organised in the context of the COP21 climate conference, FIA Secretary General for Mobility and Tourism Andrew McKellar called for greater engagement with consumers in the fight to reduce CO2 emissions, highlighting the need for sound & coherent policies and encouraging governments to set the right frameworks that would foster innovation
FIA presses for emissions reduction at COP 21 PPMC Transport Day

On the occasion of the COP21 Transport Day, and as part of the FIA mission to promote clean transport systems available to all, the FIA presented its “Global Reduction in CO2 emissions from cars: a consumer’s perspective” report (policy recommendations for decision makers). The full version the policy paper is available as a pdf here.

Speaking at the Transport Day organised by the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT Partnership), together with Bridging the Gap Initiative (BtG Initiative), and the Michelin Challenge Bibendum (MCB), Andrew McKellar presented the report and pointed to the importance of engaging with consumers when designing policies aiming at reducing the environmental impact of mobility.

Changing consumer’s approach to transport and mobility is key to promoting sustainable transport in the future and the FIA and its global network of 169 automobile and motoring clubs are fully committed to working with consumers and policy makers in supporting behavioural changes for all mobility users.

Mr McKellar further urged decision makers to implement policies that are environmentally effective, economically efficient and politically feasible, while maintaining a strong component of equity.

He said: “Good policy development is essential to embrace the consumers into rational choices when it comes to purchasing low carbon vehicles. We should be able to strengthen transparency enabling the consumer to understand the main benefits of new technologies. Government should also develop the appropriate framework that fosters innovation, rather than looking at existing statu quo”.

Held in Paris from 30 November to 11 December, COP21 represents a historic opportunity to establish a shared policy framework to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For the first time, the mobility landscape, available technology, upcoming innovations, new economic trends and political commitments are all coming together to shape a low-carbon future.
