The sun was still shining in second qualifying of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and still heated up the air in Nuremberg to summerly temperatures. In the 20 minutes long session, Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing) posted the fastest lap time from two drivers whose times were identical to one thousandth of a second: Anthoine Hubert (Van Amersfoort Racing) in second place and Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam) in third. The drivers in fourth and fifth place, Sérgio Sette Câmara (Motopark) and Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) also set identical lap times at the 2.3 kilometres long Norisring. In the ranking of the second-fastest laps, Ilott ended up ahead of Stroll, Hubert, Guanyu Zhou (Motopark) and Günther. This order will be used for the starting grid of the third race of the weekend. In the morning, the engine on the car of Callum Ilott, first in both rankings, had to be replaced, so he will be dropped ten places on the grid for the next three races in which he will be taking part, in accordance with the regulations. Thus, Anthoine Hubert inherits pole position for the second race of the Norisring meeting while Lance Stroll will be starting the third race from pole position.

Starting grid race two

After an action-packed opening part of the session, Callum Ilott (0:48.076 minutes) moved up into first place with a little over five minutes remaining. However, he wasn’t certain of his position as he saw his rivals posting similarly fast lap times. Eventually, he ended up with a margin of only 0.087 seconds from his second-placed team-mate Anthoine Hubert (0:48.163 minutes). The Frenchman, racing at the Norisring for the first time, posted the same lap time as third-placed Lance Stroll (0:48.163 minutes). As he had done so earlier than the Canadian, he claimed second place while Stroll was classified third. The same situation happened to the duo of Sérgio Sette Câmara (0:48.177 minutes) and Maximilian Günther (0:48.177 minutes), where the Brazilian ended up fourth ahead of the German.

Mikkel Jensen (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 0:48.192 minutes), Guanyu Zhou (0:48.198 minutes), Joel Eriksson (Motopark, 0:48.261 minutes), George Russell (HitechGP, 0:48.265 minutes) and David Beckmann (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 0:48.290 minutes) ended up in sixth to tenth place in qualifying. Due to the aforementioned engine replacement in Ilott’s car, the Brit will not be starting from pole position, but from eleventh place. The other drivers move up one place, so that Anthoine Hubert was able to celebrate his maiden FIA Formula 3 European Championship pole position.

Starting grid race three

In this ranking, British driver Callum Ilott (0:48.092 minutes), who came to the street circuit in Nuremberg as the runner-up in the points’ standings, was unbeatable, too. Lance Stroll (0:48.180 minutes) claimed second place from Anthoine Hubert (0:48.200 minutes), who again was the best rookie in the field. Guanyu Zhou (0:48.212 minutes), Maximilian Günther (0:48.264 minutes), Sérgio Sette Cârama (0:48.267 minutes), Mikkel Jensen (0:48.272 minutes), David Beckmann (0:48.290 minutes), George Russell (0:48.355 minutes) and Niko Kari (Motopark, 0:48.363 minutes) were classified in fourth to tenth place. Here, again, Ilott will be dropped to eleventh place while Stroll inherits first place on the grid for the 15th race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season.

Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing): “I am really happy having posted the fastest lap times in second qualifying. On my second lap already, I slightly clipped the wall going into the chicane and initially, I wasn’t sure whether my car was still okay, but everything was perfect. After that, I did my utmost and I drove four or five really consistently good laps. Finding a clear lap wasn’t easy. Unfortunately, I will be dropped ten places on the next three starting grids, so that I will be unable to start from pole position.”
