In the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, Mikko Hirvonen maintains his lead but Loeb’s victory means his advantage is cut to just one point over the Frenchman. Latvala maintains third position and Atkinson moves up the leaderboard into fourth. In the Manufacturers Championship, the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team now has a 12 point lead over both Citroën Total and Subaru.
Today’s route was scheduled to include three mountain stages before returning to Leon for the final super special stage. However, the second and longest stage was cancelled due to the volume of spectators. With a one minute lead this morning, Loeb was able to adopt a cautious approach and cruised to the finish with a one minute 06.1 second winning margin. Similarly, Atkinson and Latvala were comfortable in their positions and with little more to fight for drove for valuable points.
The battle of the day was for fourth position. Henning Solberg (Munchi’s Ford) and Mikko Hirvonen (BP Ford) were split by 15.9 seconds overnight, but Hirvonen managed to cut the deficit to 9.2 seconds by the end of the first stage. Then, when Solberg picked up a front right puncture in stage 19, Hirvonen was able to overhaul the Norwegian and consolidate the position when Solberg then also had a reported suspension problem in the final super special stage.
The FIA World Rally Championship contenders now head to South America for Rally Argentina (27-30 March).
