Pre-race: The FIA declares an official change in meteorological conditions: this enables those who qualified on shallow wet tyres – Gianmaria Bruni and the two Jordan drivers – to switch to dries. Zsolt Baumgartner starts from the pit lane. The Hungarian was due to start last in any case: he failed to set a grid time after spinning off at Degner Curve during his pre-qualifying run.
* Lap 1: The Schumacher brothers make clean starts from the front row of the grid – Michael ahead of Ralf – and sweep into the lead. The world champion opens up a 1.1s gap during the course of the first lap. Ralf is second from Jenson Button, Takuma Sato, Jarno Trulli, Mark Webber (a tardy start from third on the grid), David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve, Giancarlo Fisichella, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Juan Pablo Montoya, Rubens Barrichello, Olivier Panis, Nick Heidfeld, Christian Klien, Timo Glock, Felipe Massa, Bruni and Baumgartner.
* Lap 2: Panis passes Barrichello for 13th.
*Lap 3: Fisichella dives past Villeneuve at Turn One to wrest eighth.
* Lap 5: Michael Schumacher leads by 2.7s. Barrichello retakes 13th from Panis. A colossal traffic jam is forming behind eighth-placed Villeneuve.

* Lap 10: Michael Schumacher leads by 17.2s from Sato.
* Lap 11: Fisichella deprives Webber of sixth at Turn One. Webber, Montoya and Massa – up to 14th from the back of the grid – all pit, as does Bruni.
* Lap 12: Schumacher laps in 1m 32.973s – the race’s best yet. Sato, Trulli, Fisichella, Barrichello and Heidfeld pit.
* Lap 13: The leader comes in for fuel and tyres. He is still 2.8s clear of Button when he rejoins.
* Lap 14: Alonso and Raikkonen make scheduled stops.
* Lap 15: Running second and third on the road, Button and Coulthard pit: they rejoin fourth and fifth.Villeneuve comes in, too. Only Klien and Baumgartner have yet to pit.

* Lap 17: With the first stops over, the Schumachers head Sato, Button, Coulthard, Alonso, Trulli, Webber, Montoya, Barrichello, Fisichella, Raikkonen, Villeneuve, Massa, Heidferld, Panis, Klien, Glock, Bruni and Baumgartner. Trulli, Montoya and Barrichello are as one.
* Lap 18: Montoya passes Webber at Turn One. Webber pits at the end of the lap but rejoins soon afterwards, now 18th.
* Lap 20: Panis, 16th, makes his second stop.
* Lap 21: Webber comes in again and parks up. The Australian is the first man to post a retirement.
* Lap 22: Michael Schumacher extends his lead over Ralf to 20.2s. Montoya passes Trulli on the approach to the chicane – but runs wide and loses places to both Trulli and Montoya.
* Lap 23: Barrichello passes Trulli at Turn One. Devoid of momentum following his chicane lapse, Montoya loses out to Fisichella at the same spot. Glock takes to the grass at Degner but rejoins.
* Lap 24: Ralf Schumacher makes his second stop and resumes in fifth. Massa passes Villeneuve for 12th. Glock pits.
* Lap 25: Trulli comes in for refreshments.
* Lap 26: Michael Schumacher and Sato pit, 36.1s apart. They are first and sixth respectively when they rejoin. Massa (11th) and Heidfeld (14th) come in, too.
* Lap 27: Fisichella pits from seventh and slips to 11th.
* Lap 28: Barrichello and Montoya, seventh and eighth, head for the pit lane. They re-emerge eighth and 10th.
* Lap 30: Barrichello sets a new fastest lap – 1m 32.730s.

* Lap 41: Sato makes his final stop. He resumes in fourth, behind Button. Montoya and Fisichella stop, too.
* Lap 42: With all the significant stops completed, the Schumachers are split by 23.7s. Button runs third from Sato, Alonso, Raikkonen, Montoya, Fisichella, Villeneuve, Massa (the last unlapped runner at this point), Trulli, Klien, Heidfeld, Panis, Glock, Bruni and Baumgartner.
* Lap 46: Baumgartner – four laps adrift – spins off at Turn Four and retires.
* Lap 49: Sato is rubbing his neck occasionally. Alonso is catching him at about 0.5s per lap (although time is running out). Massa tries to pass Villeneuve for ninth at the chicane, but fails.
* Lap 50: Massa nails the Canadian – his future team-mate – on the run to Turn One.
* Lap 53: Michael Schumacher cements his 13th win of the season – but his first since Hungary. He beats Ralf Schumacher by 14.0s. Button, Sato, Alonso, Raikkonen, Montoya and Fisichella complete the scorers.
