2010 FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP
RALLY FINLAND
31.07.2010
After two days of intense competition, Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila have won their home round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Rally Finland. The Finns held off a trio of Citroëns to beat Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia by 10.1 seconds, and his third-placed team-mates, reigning World Champions Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena.
In the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, Loeb and Ogier maintain first and second position, but Latvala’s victory sees him move into third position. The Citroën Total World Rally Team also continues to lead the Manufacturers’ Championship ahead of the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.
The second and final day was even longer than Friday’s opening day of competition, with crews contesting eight stages and 162.78 competitive kilometres. Overnight rain could not have been a more welcome sight for Latvala this morning, the Finn benefitting at the front of the field with better grip over the damp roads. He extended his advantage over the opening three stages but as the roads began to dry at lunchtime, the Finn was back to sweeping the roads of loose gravel and began to slip into the clutches of the chasing Citroëns. However, he held his nerve ahead of two former World Champions to claim his first victory in Rally Finland.
Behind Ogier and Loeb, both of whom were scoring points for the Citroën Total World Rally Team in Finland, Petter Solberg finished fourth. The Norwegian started the day in second position but was unable to hold off the two Frenchmen, finishing just 6.4 seconds adrift of Loeb. Former World Champion Juha Kankkunen finished eighth overall, but Kimi Raikkonen, who was eighth last night, lost time off the road and finished a disappointing 25th overall.
The next round of the FIA World Rally Championship takes the contenders to Trier for Rallye Deutschland (19-22 August), an all-asphalt event.
