 Tourists Want Safe Holidays

27/09/2009

Tourists rate safety as their number one concern when choosing their holiday destination according to new data released today by the FIA on World Tourism Day.

Lack of safety whether due to crime, the risk of natural disasters, sanitary risks or terrorism, was the principle reason to rule out a destination, and scored highest in the survey with 8.5 points out of a possible 10. Safety was closely followed by weather which received an average 8.2 points, quality of accommodation received 8.2 points, and natural beauty 8.0 points.

The data, based on a survey conducted by the FIA, highlighted the need for tourism organisations and governments to ensure that tourists are provided with adequate information on the areas with a higher risk, maximise security measures, and establish common information and evacuation protocols for all countries in cases of disaster or health risks.

The factors that were the least valued by tourists in choosing a destination included the availability of sports facilities (4.8) and nightlife (4.9), although the latter was the highest valued factor among travellers aged 18 to 30 years. Likewise, availability of sports facilities was more important for tourists aged 18 to 45 than those aged 46 and older.

Presence of natural beauty in the surrounding area, including quality of beaches and other swimming areas, scored significantly higher in importance than quality of food or other tourist attractions.

The survey also revealed that most tourists travelled to countries within their own continent. For example Southern Europe was noted as the most frequent destination region of European travellers.  However, younger respondents from 18 to 30 years old travelled to a greater degree to destinations outside of Europe compared with older respondents.

Note to Editors

The iTest survey was conducted internationally through FIA National Automobile and Touring Clubs earlier this year, and collected detailed data from over 9,000 people in 38 different countries.  Survey respondents were predominantly from Europe, however the results are quite consistent across international regions.
