Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup
Rounds 8 & 9
Oschersleben, Germany

Maiken Rasmussen, the young Dane selected by Volkswagen Motorsport and the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission to contest the 2011 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup, had a great weekend’s racing at the Motorsport Arena, Oschersleben. At the first race this season where Maiken knew the circuit, she was classified sixth and third respectively in the Junior R-Cup results in this double-header meeting.

During dry conditions on Saturday Maiken, aged 21, qualified 15th of the 24 cars and ran as high as 13th during the race. “I had a hard battle throughout the race where I tried to pass the guy in front several times,” said Maiken, who ultimately finished 14th of the combined Pro and Junior Cup drivers and sixth in the Junior classification. “It was a hard but good race where I defended and attacked without taking too many risks.”

In contrast, Sunday’s race was wet and a completely new experience for Maiken, who started 14th on the grid. “This was my first race in full wet conditions,” she said. “I had a good start and climbed three places in the first lap and then up to eighth by the end of the race. I felt really good in the car and managed to maintain position despite big pressure from behind. I stayed patient and focused on my own race. I am really satisfied with the performance and got a lot of time on the track, which I really needed as I haven’t been that lucky in the last couple of races.” While eighth of the Pro and Junior Cup drivers, Maiken was third in the Junior classification.

The 2011 Scirocco R-Cup is one of the world’s most eco-conscious one-make series thanks to the car’s bio natural gas powered engine. The final round of the series takes the crews to Hockenheim (21-22 October).
