News Bulletin - Day 3

FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP
RALLY DE ESPANA
(01 - 04 OCTOBER 2009)

RALLY NEWS

The Citroën Total World Rally Team crew of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena today won Rally de España, their fifth consecutive victory in Spain. Team-mates Dani Sordo and Marc Marti finished second, just 12 seconds adrift, with Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen third for the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.

Citroën’s one-two in Spain means it retains the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers with one round remaining (subject to the official publication of the results by the FIA). In the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, the fight for the title will go to the final round in Wales with Hirvonen still heading Loeb, but now by just one point.

Today’s route took in another six stages and 93.88 competitive kilometres. Positions at the top of the leaderboard remained unchanged throughout the day and the only leading retirement was that of Evgeny Novikov, who crashed out for the second time this weekend.

The FIA World Rally Championship now heads to Wales for the final and decisive round of the 2009 series, the Rally of Great Britain (22-25 October).
