Singapore Hosts Opportunities Workshop

FIA clubs in the Asia Pacific region have held a workshop in Singapore to share common commercial experiences and examine potential opportunities to work together on campaigns and projects.

Global Make Roads Safe campaign ambassador and movie star, Michelle Yeoh, shares the importance of road safety education

The workshop was a follow-up to an initial meeting in Wellington, New Zealand in May at which it was agreed to focus on common challenges and to report back on progress.

Held on the 29-30 September, the workshop coincided with the Singapore Grand Prix. Participants came from clubs throughout the region, including Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India, Macau, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.

As the meeting was due to be held just after the Singapore Grand Prix, the host club AA Singapore (AAS) organised a special tour of the F1 Paddock area. For the race itself, AAS invited all club representatives to a dinner in a hotel overlooking the city circuit.

At the meeting the following day, both policy and commercial subjects were on the agenda. Michelle Yeoh, film star and Make Road Safe campaign ambassador, took an active role in the meeting. Yeoh explained to delegates and reporters her motivations behind her role as a road safety ambassador and how she had become so passionately involved in the campaign as a result of her visit to Vietnam, where she encountered some of the horrific results of poor road management.

Public policy presentations were then given by the FIA Foundation Director General David Ward, FIA Mobility Secretary General Susan Pikrallidas, and the head of iRAP Asia Rob McInerney.

The main commercial focus of the two day event was on membership acquisition and retention. Reports of best practice were presented by the Japan Automobile Federation, the Royal Automobile Club of West Australia, the Constitution of National Roads and Motorists' Association from New South Wales in Australia and the New Zealand Automobile Association.

Outside speakers gave presentations on a number of subjects, including road traffic management and real time information, battery revenue models and travel initiatives in the region. All participants in the Opportunities Working Group agreed that it had been a constructive forum to exchange information which would help all clubs to develop their services.
