| In the meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Mosley highlighted the FIA’s commitment to road safety through the ‘Make Roads Safe’ campaign. Prime Minister Abe expressed his appreciation for this and explained Japan’s positive experience in reducing road traffic deaths from a peak of 16,000 a year to below 7000.
The Prime Minister confirmed that Japan was interested to consider extending its support for global road safety efforts through its official development programmes and its contribution to the World Bank. He also added that he found it an innovative approach to try to assist developing countries through road safety.
Whilst in Japan, Mosley also held meetings with leading automobile industry leaders, including the President and CEO of Honda, Takeo Fukui, the President of Toyota, Katsuaki Watanabe, the President and CEO of Bridgestone, Shoshi Arakawa, the President of Fuji Heavy Industry Ltd, Ikuo Mori, the CEO of Nissan, Toshiyuki Shiga, and the President of Suzuki Sport Co, Nobuhiro Tajima. At these meetings a number of road safety, environmental and motor sport issues were discussed.
Mosley also visited the Honda Research and Development Centre at Tochigi and the Twin Ring Motegi race track. Also participating on the trip to Tokyo were FIA Foundation Director General, David Ward, FIA Technical consultant, Tony Purnell, and Chairman of the International Road Assessment Programme, John Dawson. |
