F1 Greenlights GPS Marshal System
The new system will enable Race Control to see the exact location of all cars at all times.

A revolutionary GPS marshalling system, developed by the F1 Technical Department in conjunction with the FIA Institute, will be introduced to the 2007 FIA Formula One World Championship.

The system, which involves a cockpit light display of flag signals, will initially compliment the usual marshals’ signals. It will enable a number of additional services for both Race Control and the teams. For instance, it will enable Race Control to see the exact location of all cars at all times and to communicate with the drivers by illuminating cockpit lights (red, yellow and blue flags). It will also allow drivers to give a start abort signal if necessary.

The system works using global positioning and radio signals, which communicate with sensors in each car. It was developed by the FIA Institute’s Open Cockpit Research Group in conjunction with the F1 Technical Department and EM Motorsports Ltd over the last two years.
