The first survey, launched
in July 2005, represented the largest and most comprehensive
analysis of public opinion ever undertaken in motor sport,
with more than 93,000 respondents. The response to this year
has been equally overwhelming and is expected to eclipse
the first survey when the results are announced later this
year.
FIA President Max Mosley said: “Last year’s
survey was the largest research study ever undertaken in
motor sport. Together with AMD we are leveraging the power
of technology to efficiently collect and process data and
bring to life the ideas of fans to enrich the future of Formula
One.”
It is now envisaged that the F1 Survey will become an annual
fixture to gauge public opinion and to help shape the future
of the sport. The opinions from last year’s survey
formed a vital part of the FIA consultation on regulations
for the 2008 Formula One World Championship.
The majority of fans strongly agreed that more overtaking,
the introduction of different types of circuits and a rise
in the number of competing teams would increase the appeal
of Formula One. They also gave their support for increasing
the excitement and competition by placing more emphasis on
driver skill and less on technical aids.
AMD once again offered its AMD Opteron servers, optimised
to cope with large amounts of web traffic, to help handle
the huge response generated by the survey.
Henri Richard, AMD Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, said: “Our
customers’ opinions play an important role in our business
decisions everyday, whether influencing motor sports or technology.
The 2006 AMD-FIA F1 survey is helping us to understand how
to shape the sport in the 21st century by providing direct
input from motor sports fans around the world.”
AMD is the Official Technology Partner of the FIA. It provides
technology expertise and resources across the range of activities
undertaken by the FIA in the automotive and motor sport sectors.
The FIA/AMD Formula One Survey 2006 has now been completed.
The results of the survey will be published on the FIA and
AMD web sites and in the October edition of F1 Racing magazine.
