Motor Sport’s Doctors Converge in Rome
F1 Medical Delegate Dr Gary Hartstein.

The biennial seminar of the FIA Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) took place on Sunday, January 15 in Rome. Chaired by FIA Institute President Sid Watkins, the seminar is designed to offer a forum to motor sport’s CMOs to share common practice and discuss new advancements in medicine.

The event was attended by around 80 delegates including the CMOs from FIA championships Formula One, World Rally, World Touring Car and GT. Also present were medical representatives from each of the circuits on which those championships are run.

F1 medical delegate Dr Gary Hartstein said the seminar is integral to the continuing progress in motorsport medicine. He said: “It was excellent to have a meeting which brings together people who do the same job in different contexts so they can learn about medical updates and share common problems and solutions.”

The seminar coincided with the joint safety symposium between the FIA Institute and the International Council of Motorsport Sciences, which was attended by most of the CMOs. Hartstein said this was particularly useful because they could then look at the implications of some of the issues brought up at the symposium over the previous three days.
