The glittering
event, attended by Prince Albert of Monaco, FIA president Max
Mosley and the great and the good of world motor sport, culminated
in the presentation of the Formula One drivers trophy to 24-year-old
Fernando Alonso, the youngest world champion in the sport’s
history.
Alonso, who is also the first ever Spaniard to take the title, was clearly
delighted to officially receive his award. He said: “I look at this
trophy and say to myself that one day, when I have children, I will be
able to tell them that I was world champion.
“It represents the work of a whole team, and the achievement of a dream.
We had to fight to win this, and I am proud to have done so. Hopefully, this
is just the start. I am only 24 years old and I hope to come back on this stage
many times in the future to receive this prize.”
Alonso was joined on stage by Renault team boss Flavio Briatore, who received
the trophy for winning the constructors’ championship. The two of
them stood on either side of the 2005 Renault F1 car, which was suspended
vertically on the stage in honour of the team’s achievements.
Briatore
said: “This
tribute is very important to us. Since Renault returned to
F1 in 2002, we have improved step by step, and finally won
both championships through our hard work. Personally, I am
delighted. But this is an award for the whole team. More than
800 people worked tirelessly to allow Renault to fight at the
front, and a whole family of partners supported us. This is
their trophy.”
Trophies were also presented to the winners of the World Rally Championship,
World Touring Car Championship and all the other FIA championships through to
karting and truck racing (see full prize list below).
In addition to these awards there were the three Formula One Promotional trophies
for the best broadcaster, promoter and national sporting authority. German commercial
channel RTL picked up the broadcasters award, whilst the promoter’s prize
went to the Automobile Cub de Monaco. In keeping with the strong Spanish representation
on the evening, the ASN award, which goes to the national sporting authority
whose licence-holders score the most points in an F1 season, went to the Real
Federación Española de Automovilismo. |
