In its new 10-year roadmap, the group recommends that the Commission brings forward proposals to reduce CO2 emissions from light and heavy duty vehicles.
 
The 1998 EU voluntary agreement to reduce CO2 emissions to 140 grams per kilometre by 2008/9 has already led to a decline in emissions of more then 10 per cent. The roadmap looks to go even further and presents a strategy for moving beyond the 140 grams per kilometre target to 120 grams by 2010.
 
But this target cannot be reached by the automotive industry alone. The group therefore endorses an integrated approach to reach involving all relevant stakeholders and measures.
 
These measures, which could all contribute to CO2 reductions, include alternative fuels, eco-driving, taxation, consumer information and congestion avoidance.
